On the field, Viktor Gyökeres – Swedish football’s pride and glory – is nothing short of a superhero; Portuguese Primeira Liga’s top scorer and in the conversation for best player in the game. Off the field, he’s a bit more enigmatic, remaining almost impossibly low-key and unknowable. We meet the star striker at his home in Lisbon – the superhero’s unassuming lair – to get to know the man behind the mask.

The morning of this interview, news about our cover star, Viktor Gyökeres, had already flooded the internet. In fact, nearly every morning, the insatiable sports media publishes something about the 27-year-old, known as one of the best strikers in the world.

The news is, more often than not, fake.

“That’s just clickbait,” Gyökeres says when I show him that day’s Google search, much of which speculated that he was leaving his current club, Sporting Clube de Portugal for an English team willing to pay 100 million euros. “Sports news is now constant, like 24/7, so they just find things to talk about,” he explains, rather disinterested, the way a Kardashian-Jenner or Taylor Swift might roll their eyes at dating rumours on the cover of grocery store gossip rags. Even when sitting down and refuting the rumours, the 188cm player looks large, his muscles stretching away at his white T-shirt and black track pants.

Though the digital speculation around Gyökeres is deafening, there’s a quiet calm at his stunning home, his lair – an airy, immaculate space with glass walls that look out onto a backyard pool, the water reflecting the southern European sun. Nestled in the quiet Portuguese enclave of Charneca da Caparica, just across the Tagus River from Lisbon, the newly-built house reflects a refined sense of Scandinavian minimalism, a callback to the Stockholm native’s roots. The house’s austerity may also stem from the fact that its sole inhabitant relocates every few years for work, making its spotless, under-decorated feel seem less like a personal choice and more like a byproduct of transience. Behind the circular wooden table where we’re sit- ting is the ground floor’s main decoration: a bureau nearly buckling under the weight of trophies, all standing below a large black and white photograph of Gyökeres with the fingers of his two hands intertwined over his mouth – the famous “mask” he throws on after scoring a goal.

For non-football fans, here’s a quick rundown of the man of the moment. Firstly, Gyökeres is one of the Swedish national team’s most reliable strikers (a forward player whose main job is to score goals). He transferred from English second-tier team Coventry City to Sporting CP for around 20 million euros in the summer of 2023, making him the Portuguese club’s record signing, and scored over 30 goals by March of 2024, becoming the fastest player to reach that milestone for this particular team. Repeatedly throughout his career, his infallible ability to score goals has helped the various teams on which he’s played progress in their respective leagues. Transfermarkt, a popular website that tracks football data, now values him at over 45 million euros, making Gyökeres one of the most valuable players in the world. With heaps of career highs to choose from, Gyökeres says his favorite memory on the field was “lift- ing the league trophy with Sporting CP”, as well as his “first hat trick in the Champions League.” (For the uninitiated, a hat trick means scoring three goals in a single match).

On the pitch, Gyökeres is a fast-moving tempest – tens of thousands of fans or haters scream as he glides across the field; sports journalists analyse and predict his every movement. Meanwhile, after the games, while the commentary and speculation rage across the news and social media, Gyökeres is likely at home studying Portuguese or play- ing video games. Even now, quietly drinking a glass of water, he exudes a certain calm.

Which is to say, when the mask comes off, Gyökeres is just... a regular guy. And before he was a star, he was just a boy growing up in Sweden’s capital. “I didn’t like football at first because I was on a team with people I didn’t know,” he says. Like most six-year-olds, he just wanted to have fun. “I was new, and I wasn’t comfortable with that. It was more the social aspect that was hard rather than the football itself.” So his career as a child football prodigy didn’t exactly begin with a bang. But once his parents moved him to a club where he fit in better, things clicked. “Since then, I’ve played,” he says with a shrug. Like any superhero or villain, this is Gyökeres’s so-called “origin story”.

Playing football in front of people – it’s just something I’m so focused on. Of course you think about it sometimes, but for me, it’s easy

Of course, when you’re younger – 10, 11, 12 – you’re always talking with your friends about playing for this club or that club, dreaming about being on the best teams in the world,” he recalls. “But that was all talk. Of course, you want to do it, but at that age, you don’t really think it through. It’s more of a dream.” With encouragement from his parents, and particularly his father, Stefan Gyökeres, who was an avid but non-professional football player-turned-coach, the dream turned into something more concrete – a goal he was actively working toward, whether it felt realistic or not. Gyökeres dropped all notions of any alter- natives if football did not work out. “I didn’t have any other plan,” he says. “But coming all the way here and seeing where [my dad and I] started, it’s crazy.” Now, Gyökeres’s name is often spoken in the same breath as Zlatan Ibrahimović and Christian Ronaldo, the Swedish and Portuguese (respectively) footballers he idolised as a child growing up in Stockholm.

So, with the dream now achieved, what does a day in the life of a football star look like, exactly? When he’s not travelling the world to play other teams, Gyökeres’s routine is surprisingly mundane. He wakes up, takes a ginger shot, downs some water, and rushes out the door. “I set my alarm for 10-15 minutes before I leave,” he says, emphasising the importance of sleeping as much as possible. He has breakfast – strawberries, blueberries, pomegranates (as of late), and three eggs – when he arrives at “his office,” a 250,000 square metre facility called Academia Cristiano Ronaldo, named after the aforementioned legendary Portuguese player who began his senior career at Sporting (perhaps you’ve heard of him). Then comes the training, which is about an hour and a half to two hours, potentially followed by a fitness treatment, and then he’s back home by 3pm or 4pm on a normal day. At that point, he takes – gasp – a nap. Waking up again around 5pm, he sometimes has a Portuguese class or heads into Lisbon for dinner, perhaps at Bar Alimentaire, one of his favourite haunts.

Gyökeres’s knack for work-life balance was inspired, at least somewhat, by his new Portuguese surroundings. “With Swedish culture, I think people work hard during the week, and then if they want to do something, they do it on weekends. Here, people enjoy the weekdays too,” he says. “They see their friends on a Monday or whatever day, have dinner, a glass of wine. In Sweden, that’s rare. You grind hard during the week and then enjoy the weekend – if you want to. That’s the big difference.” He notes that after living in a warm country, it would be hard to return to Sweden’s less generous climate. “I think Lisbon has to be one of the best cities in Europe... it feels like home,” he adds. It probably doesn’t hurt that Gyökeres is rumoured to be dating Portuguese actress Inês Aguiar.

Gyökeres might not be one of the typical fashion icons to grace the cover of this magazine, however his life and livelihood do draw similarities to the fashion world. For example, not dissimilar to the ongoing “musical chairs” amongst fashion houses and their Creative Directors – Demna at Gucci, Dario Vitale replacing Donatella at Versace, Sarah Burton picking up after Matthew M. Williams at Givenchy – multi-million dollar deals are orchestrated between football clubs each year. The English team Brighton & Hove Albion “loaned” Gyökeres to several other teams (yes, loaning is a thing in football) before ultimately selling him to Coventry in 2021, which predated his move to Sporting Lisbon in 2023. When it comes to his own fashion preferences, Gyökeres notes that he loves Loro Piana, “because the fit is good straight away,” and he “doesn’t have to do any adjustments to the clothes.”

If you think it’s Bane, you can think that. If you think it’s something else, that’s fine too

And then there’s the merch – a major piece of football’s financial puzzle, and really just another word for clothes (mostly). It’s estimated that somewhere around €3.5 billion is generated from football merchandise sales each year, thanks to legions of fans eager to wear their loyalty.

A shirt with Gyökeres’ name on the back isn’t so different from one that says Prada across the chest, or a Dior keychain dangling from your bag.

That said, despite his good looks, Gyökeres isn’t likely to pivot into modelling anytime soon. He’s far more comfortable on the pitch in front of tens of thousands of fans than in front of a fashion photographer’s camera.

“Playing football in front of people – it’s just something I’m so focused on,” he says. “Of course you think about it sometimes, but for me, it’s easy.” That kind of pressure, he explains, is nothing compared to sitting still while a roomful of stylists and assistants quietly watch you pose. “It depends on what you’re doing in the photoshoot,” he adds. Referring to our cover shoot, Gyökeres says, “It was different because I’m not so used to doing photoshoots, so it took a while before I felt comfortable, very much thanks to the team that helped me a lot during the shoot. It made it more fun than I maybe expected it to be beforehand.” Referring to that sultry, submerged cover shot, he adds: “I wouldn’t say [that] is something I normally do, but it ended up being a good laugh, and hopefully a few good photos as well.”

I think Lisbon has to be one of the best cities in Europe... it feels like home

Perhaps similar to Beyoncé’s Sasha Fierce alter ego, the gentle and slightly timid giant becomes an absolute beast on the field. By the end of 2024, Gyökeres had scored a total of 62 goals for club and country, surpassing notable players that same calendar year like fellow Scandinavian Erling Haaland and placing him alongside elite goal scorers like Lionel Messi.. By May of 2025, Gyökeres had already scored 38 goals in the 2024-2025 Primeira Liga season, making him the top scorer – not just for his team, but in the entire league. For reference, at the time of writing, the second and third highest scorers were Vangelis Pavlidis and Samu Aghehowa, with 18 and 16 goals, respectively.

And while he might not have a full-blown alter ego, there does appear to be at least one character that Gyökeres personifies on the field: Bane. For those unfamiliar, the name belongs to a DC Comics character, a particularly evil specimen with a bodybuilder’s physique. Bane is a formidable villain from the Batman universe, known for his near-superhuman strength, strategic brilliance, and relentless determination. Bane wears a distinctive mask that covers his mouth and nose giving him a menacing, inhuman appearance.

This is, supposedly, where Gyökeres’s celebratory winning mask, which his legions of fans love to emulate online and IRL, comes from. In June of last year he posted a video of himself and fans with their fingers interlaced in front of their mouth with the caption “Nobody cared until I put on the mask”, a near exact quote from Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. Despite the post, which fans (and yes, once again, a plethora of news outlets) took as a 100 per cent confirmation regarding the inspiration behind the winning tradition, Gyökeres won’t verbally confirm anything.

“Me and my friends were going on vacation, and we were talking about [what to do when I score],” he recalls. “One of them came up with the idea for the mask, and we all liked it from the first time we saw it. Since then, I’ve always done it when I score ... and it definitely stuck.” When pressed for an official confirmation, Gyökeres is as difficult to “catch” as he is on the field. “As for the character, of course, I’ve seen it,” he says. “But it’s a little like, take it how you want it. If you think it’s Bane, you can think that. If you think it’s something else, that’s fine too.”

So whether you see him as football’s newest superhero or its most elegant villain depends entirely on your vantage point. Back home, napping in the sun, sinking into a Call of Duty session, blending into the quiet of suburban Portugal, he’s just Viktor. To his teammates and fans, he’s a quiet force of nature who delivers miracles on the pitch. To those tasked with stopping him, he’s something far more menacing.
